FOUNDER COIN SERIES William “Billy” Mitchell

William “Billy” Mitchell was an American pioneer in military aviation. Born in Nice, France in 1879, he grew up in Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mitchell joined the Army in 1898, and during World War I, he served as a combat pilot in France. He quickly became an advocate for air power and was instrumental in the formation of the U.S. Army Air Service.

After the war, Mitchell continued to promote the importance of air power in military operations. He was one of the founders of the Order of Daedalians, a fraternity of military pilots who pledged to advance military aviation and support fellow aviators.

Mitchell’s outspoken advocacy for air power often put him at odds with his superiors. He was court-martialed in 1925 for criticizing the Army’s lack of preparedness for air warfare and was eventually demoted. However, his vision of air power eventually prevailed, and his contributions to military aviation are still celebrated today.

Overall, William “Billy” Mitchell’s legacy as a military aviation pioneer and his association with the Order of Daedalians serve as a testament to his enduring impact on the evolution of aerial warfare.
