David Sinton Ingalls (October 8, 1890 – July 23, 1973) Born in Cleveland, Ohio Ingalls entered Yale University in 1916. He joined the “First Yale Unit”, a group of students learning to fly. He then qualified as Naval Aviator No. 85 and was promoted to ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve Flying Corps. After going to England and taking advanced flight and gunner training he was assigned to the U.S. Northern Bombing Group in France in 1918. He flew combat missions with the British Royal Air Force, Squadron No. 213, against enemy submarine bases, airfields and supply depots. He shot down at least 5 enemy aircraft to become the U.S. Navy’s only Ace during World War l.
