ON BYLAW CHANGE
The vote on the By-law change to our eligibility requirements is ended and all votes have been recorded. I want to thank all those who engaged in the process. Participation in the vote was nearly 2 ½ times the required quorum (more than 5000 voted) representing just under 50% of our members. Over 72% of those actually voting, voted in favor of the amendment. No one who did not cast a vote was counted in the final numbers. My thanks goes out to all those that supported this effort. While it is always preferable that everyone vote, the level of this participation was much higher than normal and indicative of the significance of the issue.
The results of the vote are as follows:
YES votes in favor of the amendment to change the eligibility requirements: 3633 or 72% of the votes actually cast
NO votes against the amendment: 1416 or 28% of the votes actually cast
The amendment passes and eligibility to become a member will change.
A total of 5049 ballots were actually cast of the 10,289 ballots sent out the week of 16 May, representing 49% participation of our membership.
Votes were tabulated by the National HQ staff, non-Daedalians, and audited weekly. Votes were received either electronically or by post card. Votes were verified by name, age and member number and then double checked and recorded. Only one vote cast by a member was counted. The vote is accurate.
This strength of the YES vote signals strong support for a positive way forward for our organization and we look to the future as we continue to live up to our tenets and meet our objectives in the coming months and years.
To those that opposed this change, we heard you and hope that you will still let our tenets continue to be your guide in your participation and support of our fraternity.
To all members, By-Law 9.04(c) which sets the quorum and requires 2/3 approval of those actually voting contains a sentence that says [members that do not vote] " shall be considered as having no objection and consequently in favor of the amendment". The language is vague and confusing and we will correct it at the next voting opportunity. For this effort the raw vote was used. Even though it had no practical impact, I regret the distraction this caused and it will be corrected on a subsequent vote.
Our way ahead is laid out in the coming issue of the Flyer which will be out in a few weeks. Please look for it and engage with us as we take the next steps forward.
